Haliburton Residence
MINDEN HILLS, ONTARIO | 2012 - 2016
House Design and Documentation | with Q4 Architects
Project Overview
Being the main designer on this private residence in Haliburton, I was involved in all stages of design, from initial site visits and meetings with the client. Construction began in early June 2016 and was completed in the summer of 2017.
The house is sited in the Minden Hills area of Haliburton on a large property which has a stream running through it. The chosen site sits at the top of a ridge overlooking the stream to the west.
Design
The house layout is a result of the homeowners’ desire to have a 2 car garage connected to the house through a breezeway as well as a seasonal-use sun room. The sun room orientation and roof geometries maximize solar gain. Multiple variations to the house massing and plan optimizations were made over a two year design period.
From the project outset, the homeowners emphasized their desire to build a house that was sustainable and resilient, requiring limited maintenance and energy use over its lifetime. Insulated Concrete Form construction was chosen for its long life durability and building envelope insulating value. The house is primarily heated through ducted wood burning fireplaces and a high-efficiency boiler that provides heating to a radiant floor system. Heat recovery ventilation as well as triple-pane glazing has been installed. The homeowner plans to sustainably manage an on-site woodlot for use in heating the house.
